3. Connect Candidate PCs
Point any browser on your LAN to the server’s IP address. No software to install on candidate machines — they just open Chrome, Edge, or Firefox and start the exam.

Use Wired Ethernet, Not Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi can drop during exams causing panic. Use Cat5e/Cat6 cables and a network switch. A 24-port or 48-port Gigabit switch costs under ₦30,000 and eliminates connection issues entirely.
Get a UPS for the Server
Power cuts are the #1 exam disruption. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) keeps your server running for 15–30 minutes during outages. CBT Pro auto-saves every 30 seconds, so candidates resume exactly where they stopped.
Dedicate a Router for the CBT Room
Don't share the school's main network. A dedicated router isolates exam traffic and prevents other users from affecting exam performance. No internet connection required for the self-hosted version.
Set Chrome as Default & Enable Kiosk Mode
Pre-configure each candidate PC to open Chrome in fullscreen/kiosk mode pointing to the server. This, combined with CBT Pro's built-in fullscreen lockdown and tab detection, ensures candidates can only access the exam.
Keep the Server Close to Candidate PCs
Place the server in the same room or nearby. Short cable runs mean faster, more reliable connections. Label all cables so troubleshooting is quick during live exams.
Run a Test Exam Before Go-Live
Create a dummy exam with 5–10 questions and have staff take it on every candidate PC. This catches network issues, browser compatibility problems, and display bugs before real candidates arrive.
